Most IPTV vocabulary hides an everyday idea: an M3U link packs your account into one web address, the EPG is the program guide on your screen, catch-up lets you replay what aired earlier on some channels, and each connection on a plan lets one more screen play at the same moment. The entries below run alphabetically, so you can jump straight to the word that stopped you. Where a definition depends on one particular service, PRORANKTV is the reference point. Many PRORANKTV subscribers use live TV as listening practice in a language they are learning, so a number of entries end with a short note for learners; audio track, subtitle track and time-shift are among the words that matter most to them.
Eight terms a language learner meets first
- Audio track: a second soundtrack on a title, often in another language.
- Subtitle track: on-screen text you can pick from a menu, most common on on-demand titles.
- Closed captions: dialogue text riding inside a broadcast, when it makes it to your screen.
- EPG: the program guide you use to fix a daily listening slot.
- Catch-up: earlier programs you can replay, on channels that keep an archive.
- Favorites: your own shortlist of channels, ideally one per language.
- Search: typing part of a channel name instead of paging through a country.
- Time-shift: pausing or rewinding live TV, where the player and channel allow it.
Terms from A to E
APK
Android software travels as an APK file. On an Android TV box, or on a Fire TV Stick running Fire OS, a player you cannot find in the official store is installed from one, and the safest copy is the one on the player developer’s own website. PRORANKTV publishes no APK, so a file carrying our name did not come from us.
Archive window
The stretch of past days you can replay on a catch-up channel. Each channel has its own: a busy national channel might keep several days, its neighbor in the list none at all. To see the limit, scroll backwards through the guide on a marked channel until the past slots stop opening.
Audio track
Some streams and titles carry more than one soundtrack, typically different languages. If your player has an audio or language menu, it lists them while the video plays. For learners: extra tracks turn up most on on-demand titles, title by title, while a live channel more often has just one. A film you already know well, heard in the language you are studying, is an easy first use.
Bitrate
Measured in megabits per second, bitrate is the data budget behind each second of picture. A bigger budget buys sharper grass on a football pitch and cleaner fast pans. For your connection, set aside roughly 10 Mbps per HD stream and 25 Mbps per 4K stream.
Buffer and buffering
Players keep a few seconds of video in reserve; that reserve is the buffer. Buffering is the stall you see once the reserve is used up and the next pieces have not arrived, usually with a spinning icon. A single channel stalling suggests a problem with that feed; everything stalling at once suggests your connection or device.
Catch-up
On channels that keep an archive, catch-up lets you open a program after it has aired, straight from the guide. It is never available across the whole line-up, and how far back you can go depends on the channel. PRORANKTV offers it on the channels that carry it, and the PRORANKTV catch-up page shows what it looks like in common players. For learners: a 7 p.m. bulletin you only half followed can be played again at 9, from the first headline.
Channel group
Long channel lists are split into folders, most often one per country, with news, sport, kids and movie channels sorted inside. For learners: a language seldom gets a folder of its own. Spanish, for instance, is spread across Spain and several Latin American and US Spanish-language groups, so it pays to learn where your target language lives. Our page on which languages are in the line-up maps them.
Closed captions
Mostly a US broadcasting feature: the dialogue as text, embedded in the TV signal itself. Whether it reaches your screen through IPTV depends on the particular stream and on your player, so treat captions on live channels as a bonus, never a promise. For learners: when they do show up, captions in the language being spoken help you match sounds to written words.
Codec: H.264 and HEVC
Video is squeezed before it travels, and the codec is the squeezing method. H.264 is the old reliable that almost every device can play. HEVC, sometimes labeled H.265, gets similar quality from less data and is common on 4K channels; hardware that cannot decode it natively may answer with a black screen, freezes or stutter.
Connection
Think of a connection as permission for one screen to be playing. You may install the login on every device you own; what the plan limits is how many of them stream simultaneously. A replay, an on-demand film and each tile of a multi-view layout all use one while they run. PRORANKTV plans offer one, two, three or five, each listed with PRORANKTV prices.
Decoder
Inside the player, the decoder rebuilds full pictures from compressed video. Set to hardware, it leans on the device’s video chip and usually runs smoother; set to software, it uses the main processor and copes better with unusual formats. When one channel alone misbehaves, switching this setting is a sensible first try.
Developer Options
Fire OS hides the menu that allows apps from outside the Amazon store. To unhide it, go to My Fire TV > About, highlight the device name and click select 7 times; the new menu then appears in My Fire TV. None of this applies to the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, whose Vega OS does not allow sideloading.
EPG
Short for electronic program guide. It is the timetable grid in your player, with the current show, the next one and the days ahead for every channel that has listings. For learners: the guide is how a channel list becomes a habit, such as the same forecast and bulletin at the same hour each day, and on channels with an archive it is also where catch-up starts. The PRORANKTV TV guide page covers loading and refreshing it.
EPG URL
Listings can come from their own address. At PRORANKTV that address is an xmltv.php link serving data in the XMLTV format. With an Xtream Codes login you rarely need it, because the guide loads on its own; a player fed only the M3U playlist may ask you to enter it under its guide or EPG settings.
Expiry date
Your term’s final day, found in the account or settings area of most players. After it, every device goes dark together, which is easy to mistake for an outage. PRORANKTV plans never renew by themselves, so note the date when your login arrives.
Terms from F to L
Favorites
A personal shortlist of channels, stored by the player on that one device. For learners: one favorites list per language keeps your practice channels a click away rather than three folders deep. TiviMate reserves favorites for its Premium tier, while many other players include them without an upgrade.
Frame rate
The number of still images shown each second. Most regular programming uses 25 or 30, a lot of sport 50 or 60, and cinema 24. Judder on slow pans can often be cured by switching on frame-rate matching in the device’s video settings, on devices that have it.
HDR
High dynamic range means brighter highlights, deeper shadows and fuller color, on titles mastered that way. You only see it when three things line up: an HDR title, a player that passes it through and a television able to show it.
Hidden groups
Folders you switch off so they vanish from the list. Leave visible only the groups in the languages you practice, and a line-up of 25,000+ channels becomes something you can browse with a remote. In TiviMate this needs Premium; other players offer something similar or nothing at all.
Latency
Live IPTV runs a little behind the original broadcast, usually by a few seconds and sometimes by more. That lag is why a phone alert can tell you about a goal before your television does. Because streams are packaged before they travel, some of it is unavoidable.
Line
Industry shorthand for one account. A line has its own username and password, its own limit on simultaneous streams and its own end date. Providers talk about creating a trial line for a test and extending a line when you renew.
Live channel
Anything playing on the broadcaster’s timetable. Tune in at 7:20 and you meet the bulletin twenty minutes in. For learners: live speech is partly unscripted, overlapping and quick, which is exactly what course audio is not, and that is its value as practice.
Terms from M to R
M3U link
Your whole subscription expressed as a single playlist address, built on get.php with the username and password inside it. Playlist-style players such as VLC take it directly. Since the link alone is enough to sign in, share it with no one. The M3U playlist walkthrough shows where it goes.
MAC address
Every network device has one: twelve characters in pairs, with colons between them. On a MAG box it always starts 00:1A:79. Certain boxes and TV apps register a subscription against that identifier rather than a username, which is why changing the device means registering again.
Multi-view
Two or more live channels sharing one screen in tiles, a feature of TiviMate Premium. Every tile pulls its own stream, so a four-tile layout uses four connections.
Now and next
A strip across the bottom of a live channel in many players, naming the current program with a progress bar and the one after it. For learners: one glance tells you whether the bulletin has just started or is about to finish.
Panel
Providers and resellers manage accounts from a web dashboard called the panel: making new lines, setting stream limits, moving end dates. Viewers never log into it. It is the reason a fresh account can be ready a few minutes after an order.
Player app
IPTV Smarters Pro, TiviMate, Smart IPTV and iPlayTV are all players, and every one of them starts empty until a subscription is entered. With an Xtream Codes login, IPTV Smarters Pro divides into Live TV, Movies and Series; TiviMate centers on live channels and the guide. iPlayTV exists only for Apple devices, and on Apple hardware the free Smarters app is listed as Smarters Player Lite.
Portal URL
MAG boxes skip the username and password and use a portal address instead. You type it into the portal settings one time; afterwards the provider’s server identifies the box through its MAC address. Our MAG and Formuler box guide shows the screens.
Reseller and credits
Resellers buy credits on a provider’s panel and turn each credit into subscription time for one of their own customers. The streams still come from the provider above them. How credits work at PRORANKTV is explained on the PRORANKTV reseller program page.
Resolution tags
The letters inside a channel’s name tell you its picture size: SD is standard definition, HD means 720 lines, FHD 1080 and 4K or UHD 2160. If the same channel appears under several tags, each is a separate version of one feed; take the highest your screen and line can handle. PRORANKTV carries 4K, FHD and HD wherever the source exists, as the PRORANKTV 4K page explains.

Search
Most players can find a channel or title from a fragment of its name. For learners: typing “tele” should bring up Telemundo, Telecinco and Telefe together, from whichever groups they sit in, which is far quicker than paging through three countries with a remote. Some players search live channels and the on-demand library separately.
Server URL
Sometimes labeled host, this is where your player sends the login. It begins with http:// or https:// and can end with a colon and a port number. Typing it without the beginning or the end is the classic reason a perfectly correct username and password are refused.
Set-top box
A small box connected to the TV whose main job is live television. MAG models use the portal-and-MAC method above, and Android-based ones such as Formuler boxes run the same player apps as a phone or stick.
Sideloading
Installing software from a downloaded APK file and skipping the store altogether. Fire OS sticks permit it with the Downloader app after Developer Options are enabled, as the Fire TV Stick setup guide shows. Roku does not permit it, and neither does the Vega OS Fire TV Stick 4K Select.
Subtitle track
A text option you choose from a menu, in whichever languages the title provides. For learners: on-demand titles are where subtitle tracks turn up most, and they vary title by title; on live channels, text appears only when the broadcast carries it and the player can display it. One common progression is translated subtitles first, then subtitles in the language being spoken, then none at all.
Time-shift
Holding a live channel on pause, or jumping back a minute, and then continuing a little behind the broadcast. Support for it varies by player and by channel. For learners: where it is available, it is the fastest way to hear a sentence a second time.
Trial
A free, time-limited login to see how a service behaves on your hardware and broadband. The PRORANKTV free trial lasts 24 hours and is requested in a WhatsApp chat, where the login arrives too.
VOD
Short for video on demand. These are the movies and series you start at a time of your choosing, kept in their own sections of the player rather than in the channel list. The PRORANKTV library holds 120,000+ titles. For learners: on-demand titles can be paused and replayed freely and more often carry subtitle and audio tracks, which makes them the calmer half of practice beside live TV.
Xtream Codes
The most common login format: server URL, username, password. It took its name from a long-gone server panel, and today it simply means a player can pull in live channels, the library and the guide from those three values. PRORANKTV sends them on WhatsApp along with an M3U link, and the Xtream Codes setup page walks through each field.
Putting the words to use
You do not have to study any of this first. Your login comes with every field ready to copy, and after an evening in a player most of these words stop looking foreign. Come back here when a settings screen, an error message or a sales page throws a term at you. For device-by-device steps, start from the PRORANKTV setup guides.
Questions this article leaves open
What is the difference between an audio track and a subtitle track?
An audio track is a soundtrack you hear, while a subtitle track is text you read on screen. A title with several audio tracks lets you switch the spoken language; one with several subtitle tracks lets you choose the written language. You pick either one from the playeru2019s menus while the video runs, and on-demand titles offer them far more often than live channels do.
What is an EPG in IPTV?
An EPG, or electronic program guide, is the timetable grid inside your player: the show on each channel right now, the one after it and the schedule for the days ahead. Your player compiles it from the listings bundled with the subscription; an Xtream Codes login brings them in automatically, while an M3U setup usually needs the xmltv.php guide address added by hand.
Which is better, an M3U link or Xtream Codes?
Xtream Codes is better wherever a player accepts it, because one login brings in live channels, the movie and series library and the program guide together, and it is easier to type with a remote. Save the M3U link for playlist-only players such as VLC. PRORANKTV sends both, so you can use whichever your player needs.
Do all IPTV channels have catch-up?
No. Only channels with a stored archive offer catch-up, and how many days each one keeps varies. Players usually mark those channels with a small icon, and you open past programs by scrolling back in the guide. Check the channels you rely on during a free trial rather than assuming every one has it.
What does a connection mean on an IPTV plan?
A connection is one stream playing at the same moment. Installing the login on extra devices costs nothing; the plan only caps how many of them stream simultaneously. A replay, an on-demand title or a multi-view tile each uses a connection while it plays. PRORANKTV sells one, two, three or five.
Put the language you are learning on the screen tonight
Every PRORANKTV term carries all 25,000+ channels, with every language group from Spanish and French to Korean and Hindi. One month costs $15, the login is delivered over WhatsApp in under 15 minutes after payment. Not convinced after a few evenings of listening? There is a 7-day window to ask for your money back.
